A Trip from Prescott to La Crosse
by Angela C.
Wisconsin has a lot to offer to anyone looking for outdoor activities, food and drink, or simply just looking for some beautiful scenery. If you desire a scenic drive, perhaps a day trip, Wisconsin’s Great River Road is an excellent option. This scenic byway follows the Mississippi River from its confluence with the St. Croix River in Prescott down to Dubuque, IA. Along this road you will drive through magnificent bluffs, quaint little towns full of history, and you are sure to spot a bald eagle or two along the way.
This is a list of some of the best stops on Wisconsin’s Great River Road, Highway 35, between Prescott and La Crosse. This stretch is a perfect day trip if you are coming from the Twin Cities. We have included historical stops, bars and restaurants, and scenic views to keep you wanting more as you follow the Mighty Mississippi through Wisconsin’s Driftless Region.
Prescott, WI
This is a small town across from historical Hastings, MN, where the gorgeous St. Croix River meets the Mississippi. Here you will find lots of hiking trails, as well as the Great River Road Interpretive Center: Freedom Park.
Hager City, WI
There is a large chicken statue at the intersection of US 63 and the Great River Road. Hager Heights Chicken offers excellent broasted chicken meals, as well as burgers and shakes, for reasonable prices. Sit outside and enjoy your Wisconsin broasted chicken, cole slaw, and baked beans.
Another great stop in Hager City worth mentioning is the Harbor Bar. Located right on the river with views of Red Wing and it’s famous Barn Bluff, this restaurant is well known for its Jamaican jerk recipes. Our personal favorite though is the pork belly tacos. This delicious meal is a must stop, and you can eat outside on one of their colorful picnic tables along the river.
Stockholm, WI
This cute, cozy little town can be missed in the blink of an eye, but you will want to stop for some shopping and a pie from the Stockholm Pie and General Store!
Pepin, WI
This town has the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder, so you know its got some history to boast about! The Pickle Factory is a great stop for a drink or quick bite. It is located near the Pepin Marina, which has a beautiful walk out to Lake Pepin, a natural widening of the Mississippi River.
Nelson, WI
If you skipped lunch on the way before you got to Nelson, you will want to stop here for a bite. J&J BBQ has excellent ribs and other BBQ delights, and Nelson Creamery is a must stop for cheese and ice cream! We suggest picking up a pack or two of their garlic cheese curds, yum! The creamery also offers meals that are deliciously cheesy.
Alma, WI
This Swiss rooted town is full of history, and is just a joy to walk around and take in the sights. There are a lot of shops to check out, and Wings Over Alma Nature & Art Center has some excellent local art and an observation deck for viewing eagles and other birds on the river. Spend a day fishing on the Great Alma Fishing Float, or take in the views of the river and its surrounding bluffs at the Buena Vista Park Overlook.
La Crosse, WI
La Crosse is the biggest city on this list, and is home to a few colleges. You can jump on the La Crosse Queen for a cruise on the Mississippi, or hike up Granddad Bluff for some scenic views. If roadside attractions are your thing, La Crosse is home to the world’s largest 6 pack of beer. Stop at Buzzard Billy’s for some Cajun cuisine and walk across the street to Pearl Ice Cream Parlor for dessert. There is something for everyone in La Crosse!
